Step 2. Closing your old accounts

Be sure to leave adequate funds in your old accounts, keeping them active long enough for outstanding checks and automatic withdrawals to clear. This process may take a few weeks.

Once you are sure the old accounts are inactive, you can send the Account Closing Request Form to your previous financial institution, asking them to send you the balance from those accounts. Be sure to destroy your old checks, ATM/debit cards and deposit slips.
